My Mission Statement
After I spent most of yesterday trying to improve the layout of the College Critic, I decided to start thinking about changes I could make to the content. I started this site about a month and a half ago with the purpose of academic discussion and debate. The dream I have always had in mind is one of an open forum that is tolerant of all views and perspectives, no matter how radical or generic. I have always had a love of reading, especially news related items. I like to stay current with everything that occurs in our world, and I think that history is just as important as the present and future. Up until now, I have been picking things out of the news each day and providing commentary and my personal opinion. I am the type of person that likes to detach myself from an issue and examine it from both sides. For example, half my family is Jewish, so I have a close connection with the conflict in Israel with the Palestinians. While I am slightly biased towards the Israeli cause, I am able to see that the Palestinians viewpoint and claims are completely valid and should not be ignored. With this concept in mind, my mission has always been to the reader with a viewpoint that maybe he or she had not condsidered up until now. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but if you are brave enough to state your opinion, you should be brave enough to listen attentively to other perspectives that are flung your way.
Playing upon this mission, I try to post about articles that will make the reader think. In my opinion, knowledge is power, but true knowledge can only be achieved with the help of others. No one on this planet can possibly know anything, but through collective knowledge we can get very close. The College Critic is designed to be exactly that: a community of collective knowledge. We draw upon our personal knowledge and experiences in order to contribute to the knowledge of others. While traffic is starting to grow to this site, there still aren’t enough active readers to fully achieve this goal at the moment. I really do hope that someday this website will grow into a web community, with multiple authors, many contributing readers, and a vast collection of highly valuable perspectives. For now, I will continue to do what I do best, which is read, think, and write.
My personal motives for blogging are simple. I find that the best way to fully understand and examine something is to write about it. There are so many benefits to the introspection that occurs when you write a thoughtful opinion piece, only one of which is a greater grasp of the subject. I have always written with a fairly academic and formal tone, which is a habit I am trying to break. Whenever I try to write about something serious, I have a tendancy to switch to such an impersonal voice. Along these lines, most of my articles do not involve me. I don’t know if this affects readership. I want to build a personal relationship with the people who read my blog, since a community cannot exist without intertwined relationships. I want to know my readers, and I want my readers to know me. In order to fix this, I will try to write more personal pieces, and maybe tell a few more stories.
The future of the College Critic looks bright for now. Traffic is starting to roll in in, both from Google and from people coming over from Blogitude (a special thanks goes out to Mark!), and the site is slowly taking shape and finding its niche. For the few people who read this blog consistently, thank you. This blog was created by me, but it is continued by the readers. I added a contact me page on the sidebar with the different ways you can contact me. I want your input. I want to know what makes you keep coming back and what needs to be improved upon. I want to know what you want to hear about, and most of all, what makes you think. This page was designed to become a community, and a community revolves around the residents. Remember, read what the Critic has to say, and then criticize the Critic. Feel free to chew up my entire argument and spit it out. Use stats, figures, graphs, charts, audio/video clips, or maybe even refer an expert to the site to back you up. Just present a valid view or perspective and the community will listen.
Sincerely,
Jason (The College Critic)
